Jack Whelan for Delaware County CouncilJack Whelan, a longtime resident of Delaware County, is seeking the support of area residents for a second term on Delaware County Council. A graduate of Temple University School of Law, Whelan served as an Assistant District Attorney in Delaware County from 1986 to 1991, working to keep our streets safe. In the DA’s office, Whelan served as a trial team leader and prosecuted individuals for capital offenses, felonies, and misdemeanors.

Whelan is a partner at the law firm of Whelan, Doyle and Pressman and is an active member of his local community. A resident of Ridley Township, Whelan has served as chairman of the township’s Police and Public Safety Committee for 10 years.

Whelan currently serves as Vice Chairman of Delaware County Council, where he makes crime prevention and emergency preparedness for county residents are an area of special focus and expertise. On Council, Jack works closely with the District Attorney’s office on programs such as the Roam Secure Alert Network (RSAN) utilized on area college campuses and Delco Alert, which utilizes mobile and electronic devices to provide emergency notification to area residents.

Whelan is a strong proponent of fiscal responsibility in county government and has worked to keep taxes low. For the 2009 fiscal year, Whelan helped oversee he development of a county budget that resulted in no tax increase for county property owners by calling for a hiring freeze, providing retirement incentives for existing county employees, and requiring that each department within county government to implement cost cutting measures.

Whelan is also a leading advocate on Council for revitalization efforts of Delaware County’s first-generation communities, helping to improve the quality of life in local municipalities, reducing crime and creating jobs.

Jack is also the point person on County Council in combating the Federal Aviation Administration new flight plan that has resulted in more planes flying over Delaware County neighborhoods. His work on this issue has included working closely with the county’s legal counsel on this issue and testifying be a Senate Subcommittee on this issue.

Jack and his wife, Peggy, live in Ridley Township with their four children.
